: How did Maine get its name?
:

Hi Eric,

According to http://www.yahooligans.com/content/ask_earl/20020528.html ...

"The state of Maine was first named around 1622 by a man called Sir Ferdinando Gorges. This Englishman was granted the rights to the territory in that year, according to the Maine Secretary of State Kid's Page. The area was called Maine for many years, even though it was a part of the state of Massachusetts. It wasn't until 1820 that Maine became its own state. No one's really sure why Gorges named the territory Maine. Some think sailors first called the area the 'main land,' and that's where the state's name came from. Others think the name traces back to the Gorges family home near the small English village called Broadmayne."
